There’s been a long list of things that Donald Trump has mishandled since being sworn in as President of the United States. But one of the most glaring errors thus far on Trump’s presidential resumé has got to be the lackluster way in which he handled the relief efforts in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria. That poor, devastated island was left completely decimated in the wake of that natural disaster, and even to this day they are struggling to get vital resources to their millions of inhabitants. And it’s mostly Donald Trump who is to blame for their current state of affairs.
One of the biggest blunders of Trump’s during this relief ordeal was his public spatting with the Mayor of San Juan, Carmen Yulín Cruz. This week, during an interview, Cruz didn’t mince words when she was asked to offer up her opinion on Donald Trump. She said, “He was disrespectful to the Puerto Rican people, he was disrespectful to the American people who were leaving their homes to come help us here. Where he needed to be a commander-in-chief, he was a disaster-in-chief.”
“President Trump does not embody the values of the good-hearted American people that have [made] sure that we are not forgotten,” added the passionate lawmaker from Puerto Rico.
The way Donald Trump publicly humiliated Mayor Cruz (or at least tried to) was met with instant backlash. As it should have. She’s a hardworking politician who is just trying to help her people get the much-needed aide and support they deserve.
She concluded her statement by saying that, “We owe it to the memory of those people to know. And we owe it to the transformation of Puerto Rico: why they died, and how we can ensure that this does not happen again.”
