On Saturday, Donald Trump lashed out at US intelligence leaders for their conclusion that Russia interfered in the 2016 election, according to The Hill, calling them “political hacks” and slamming the investigations into Russian interference as a “Democratic hit job.”

One of those her targeted was former FBI director James Comey, whom Trump fired earlier this year because he was investigating Trump’s collusion with Russia.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump blasted former U.S. intelligence officials by name, including former CIA Director John Brennan, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and former FBI Director James Comey:

I mean, give me a break, they are political hacks. So you look at it, I mean, you have Brennan, you have Clapper and you have Comey. Comey is proven now to be a liar and he is proven now to be a leaker.

So you look at that and you have President Putin very strongly, vehemently says he had nothing to do with them.

Trump said that the investigation into Russian interference in the election was a “Democratic-inspired thing” and a “pure hit job.”

On Twitter, Comey responded with two quotations. The first was a quote from a sermon from the late English preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon about the difference between a truth and a lie:

The tweet included a picture of the Great Falls of the Potomac. Comey explained hours later that he included the picture because he likes it and it reminded him of his favorite Bible verse—which was also a favorite of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.:

Comey had testified in Congress that Trump asked him to drop an investigation of his campaign’s ties to Russian officials. He, along with former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and former CIA Director John Brennan, issued a report in January describing unprecedented Russian intelligence operation to undermine the US democratic process and help elect Trump. The report, which was issued on behalf of the 17-agency intelligence community, did not address whether the interference affected the outcome of the election.

According to the Washington Post, Clapper and Brennan jointly appeared on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday, and they were more blunt in their responses to Trump’s comments than Comey was. Both men said the president is dangerously downplaying Russia’s threat to US democracy and suggested that Putin is playing Trump.

Brennan said Trump’s refusal to acknowledge Russia’s meddling in the elections demonstrates that he can be manipulated by foreign leaders who “appeal to his ego and try to play upon his insecurities.” Clapper agreed, saying Trump is “very susceptible to rolling out the red carpet and honour guards and all the trappings and pomp and circumstance that come with the office.”

Comey’s Twitter followers loved his gentler response to Trump’s invective:

What do YOU think?
