When Trump found a way to destroy America’s land and Obama’s legacy in one fell swoop, he lit up like a war on Christmas tree. This week, he traveled to Utah to do nothing more than announce the reduction of Democrat-appointed national monuments.
Before Obama wrapped up his brilliant presidency, he declared Bear Ears in Utah a national monument to protect the mesas and canyons in Utah’s poorest county. Several Native American tribes consider Bear Ears sacred land, and they depend on its natural features to keep their culture intact.
So what does Trump do?
He travels to the state capitol in Utah to announce the 85% reduction to the 1.35 million acre Bear Ears. Trump also set his sights on the Clinton-created Grand Staircase in Utah, which will experience a 50% reduction.
Trump refused to visit either place; he was only there to attack Democrats.
Brian Sybert, executive director of Conservation Lands Foundation, responded to Trump’s announcement in the following statement:
“This is nothing more than political score settling from an administration that doesn’t seem to comprehend the extraordinary value these lands hold for Native American communities and all Americans.”
He continued, “Make no mistake: the near elimination of these national treasures is beyond belief. These lands belong to the people, not corporate polluters.”
